Emma Roberts is set to star in the film adaptation of Rebecca Serle’s New York Times bestselling novel, Expiration Dates.
As reported by Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios is developing a feature adaptation of Serle’s bestselling novel, with Roberts attached to star. Expiration Dates follows the life of Olive, a woman who discovers that every time she meets a new man, she receives a slip of paper with his name and the exact amount of time they will be together.
This marks the latest adaptation of Serle’s work. The author’s young adult novel When You Were Mine was adapted into Hulu’s Rosaline, starring Kaitlyn Dever in the comedic twist on Romeo and Juliet. Additionally, Serle developed the hit TV adaptation, Famous In Love, based on her YA series of the same name, which starred Bella Thorne and ran for two seasons on Freeform.
The movie continues Roberts’ growing streak of starring in female-driven and emotionally rich projects. The American Horror Story alum, who recently starred in Amazon MGM’s Space Cadet and Maybe I Do, is also set to lead another romantic book adaptation titled A Murder Uncorked.
Other upcoming adaptations include Serle’s international bestseller, In Five Years, which sold more than 2.3 million copies worldwide, and is being developed at New Line with Working Title producing. Another best-selling novel, One Italian Summer, which sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide, is currently in development at Paramount with Temple Hill.
Roberts will also serve as a producer through her label, Belletrist, alongside Karah Preiss and Matt Matruski. Her interest in literary adaptations has also become a defining feature of her production company, which has helped bring numerous books to screen, including Tell Me Lies and First Kill.
Chelsea Bradshaw and Jessica Pugh’s new production company, Featherweight Pictures, is also producing. The pair previously ran Sue Kroll’s Kroll & Co. for the tenure of the company’s deal with Amazon MGM, which produced projects like Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
The project continues Amazon MGM’s investment in character-driven romance films, which include The Map That Leads To You, Red, White & Royal Blue, The Idea of You, and an upcoming adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel, Verity. With Expiration Dates in the early stages of development, no release window has been confirmed, and there have been no other casting announcements.
