THE governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah has presented a record-breaking ₦971 billion budget proposal for the 2025 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly.

Titled the “Budget of Exponential Growth and Inclusive Prosperity,” the proposal includes ₦837.9 billion for capital expenditure (86% of the total budget) and ₦133.1 billion for recurrent expenditure (14%).

This proposed budget surpasses the 2024 budget of ₦521.5 billion, which allocated ₦414.3 billion (79%) to capital expenditure and ₦107.2 billion (21%) to recurrent expenditure.

Similar to the previous year, the 2025 budget prioritizes substantial investment in education and critical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, water supply, transport services, energy, and the digitization of public services.

Education remains a top focus, receiving ₦320.6 billion—over 33% of the total budget for the second consecutive year.

Governor Mbah highlighted the budget’s alignment with his administration’s goals of poverty eradication and inclusive development, ensuring that no segment of society is left behind.

He also announced a remarkable increase in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which grew from ₦37.4 billion in 2023 to ₦144.7 billion by September 2024—a 286.2% surge—reducing reliance on federal allocations.

Addressing the House, Mbah emphasized the government’s commitment to economic transformation, private sector investment, and elevating Enugu to one of the top three states by GDP in Nigeria.
