MANCHESTER City needed a late goal from Phil Foden to scrape past Leeds United 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium and stay within touching distance of English Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Before Foden’s stoppage-time winner, Manchester City had blowna two-goal lead against the promoted strugglers and looked like losing further ground to Arsenal.
The result moves Pep Guardiola’s side up to second in the table, four points behind the Gunners, while it is a sixth defeat in seven top-flight matches for Leeds.
At the Stadium of Light, an inspired Sunderland came from two goals down to beat Bournemouth 3-2 in torrential rain and go fourth in the Premier League table.
Bournemouth took the lead in the seventh minute through Amine Adli who scored his first goal for the club from close range after Evanilson had struck Antoine Semenyo’s low cross against ....
The visitors added a second eight minutes later in stunning circumstances as Tyler Adams successfully lobbed Sunderland keeper Robin Roefs from inside the centre circle.
But Sunderland hit back in the 30th minute when Alex Scott was adjudged to have caught Reinildo in the area and Enzo Le Fee dispatched the resulting penalty kick.
Seconds after the restart, Sunderland levelled with Bertrand Traore’s low driven strike that caught out Bournemouth keeper Djordje Petrovic at his near post.
Moments later Bournemouth had a goal disallowed when Evanilson was flagged for offside after he tapped in Semenyo’s cross which looked to be deflecting into the bottom corner.
Evanilson was made to pay for his error as Sunderland completed their turnaround in the 69th minute through substitute Brian Brobbey who headed in Le Fee’s corner.
Bournemouth pushed for a late equaliser and even hit the crossbar through Marcus Tavernier’s powerful effort from the edge of the box.
Cherries substitute Lewis Cook was shown a straight red card in the 96th minute for catching Sunderland’s Noah Sadiki with his elbow as the hosts held on to end their three-match winless run.
At the Gtech Community Stadium, Super Eagles of Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka was an unused substitute as Brentford striker Igor Thiago took his tally for the season to 11 goals in 13 games with a late double as the Bees won 3-1 to inflict a fourth straight defeat on struggling Burnley.
In a game that remained 0-0 until the 81st minute, the Brazilian striker opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Zian Flemming replied for Burnley with a penalty at the other end four minutes later.
But Brentford regained the lead a minute later as Thiago smashed home from close range after Jordan Henderson’s ball into the box created problems for the Burnley defence before Dango Ouattara sealed the victory in injury time.
The home side were on the front foot early on, with Thiago firing over from close range after a cutback from Mikkel Damsgaard shortly before the Danish midfielder also went close.
It was not until the final minutes of a goalless first half that Burnley had their first shot on target as Dutch forward Flemming forced Caoimhin Kelleher into an acrobatic save.
Thiago had a goal ruled out for offside and Italy youth international with Nigerian blood Michael Kayode headed narrowly wide inside the first 10 minutes of the second half and Keith Andrews’ Brentford were growing increasingly frustrated.
But then Axel Tuanzebe fouled Ouattara in the box, allowing Thiago, who missed from the spot at Brighton last weekend, to break the deadlock.
However, Burnley struck back when Kayode conceded another spot-kick only moments later with Flemming scoring his fourth goal in five matches only for Thiago to restore the home side’s advantage with his 86th-minute strike.
Ouattara then put the result beyond doubt as the Bees climbed to eighth in the table with 19 points from 13 matches.
Burnley remain second-bottom with 10 points.
