Eric Chelle capped what could potentially be his final match for MC Oran with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Union Sportive de Sétif in their Coupe d’Algérie Round of 32 clash on Saturday evening, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Malian tactician was announced earlier this week as the new head coach of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, following an agreement with the Nigerian Football Federation.

However, the announcement came while Chelle still serves as head coach of Algerian club MC Oran, a position he has held since his appointment in October 2024.

In a statement released on Wednesday, MC Oran confirmed that Chelle had not yet been relieved of his duties and would oversee the team during the cup match against USM Sportif.

The club added that a final decision on his future would be made following a meeting after the game.

Chelle is widely expected to step down from his role at MC Oran to take charge of the three-time African champions, a position he is reportedly eager to embrace.

His appointment has sparked mixed reactions in Nigeria, with some stakeholders questioning his credentials to lead the Super Eagles, while others believe he is the right man to guide the 2023 AFCON runners-up.

However, Chelle provided a boost to his supporters on Saturday, leading MC Oran to a narrow win against USM Sportif in the Algerian Cup. Merouane Dahar’s 53rd-minute penalty sealed the victory, securing Oran’s spot in the Round of 16.

The result improves Chelle’s record at MC Oran to six wins, two draws, and five losses in 13 matches.

Before his dismissal as Mali’s head coach in June, Chelle recorded an impressive 14 wins, five draws, and three losses in charge of the Eagles.

If all goes according to plan, Chelle is expected to arrive in Nigeria on Sunday, with his official unveiling as the Super Eagles head coach scheduled for Monday.
