Eve is opening up like never before in her brand-new memoir Who’s That Girl?, where she reveals how she started a relationship with Suge Knight to get her revenge on Dr. Dre.
At the 2001 Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. Backstage, while hosting her, she heard that Suge Knight was in the building.
“I knew what I had to do,” she recalls. Brushing off her bodyguard’s hesitation, Eve walked right up to the Death Row Records mogul. “Hi, I have been wanting to meet you,” she told him.
She said they went to dinner and began dating. While they were dating, Suge became a regular presence at Interscope Records. At the time, Eve had already dropped two albums but was clashing with Dr. Dre. Suge.
“I was still in my little mood about Dre even though we made a solid hit together, so having Suge, his former boss at Death Row stomping around Interscope felt like some sweet revenge. I am not really sure how I concocted this idea yet here we were,” Eve writes.
When Knight showed up at Interscope on her behalf, she says it rattled label head Jimmy Iovine. “I feel like he [Jimmy] took his anger out on my third album,” she reveals.
The romance didn’t last long because Ruff Ryders’ Dee and Waah Dean intervened, warning Eve against the association. She listened and broke up with the record executive over the phone. “He admitted he would’ve given me the same advice,” she notes.
Suge has yet to publicly address Eve’s version of events.
