Super Eagles and Fulham defender Calvin Bassey was delighted to have gotten off the mark for the season in his side’s 3-2 win over Burnley at Turf Moor last night, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 25-year-old has become one of the most important players for Marco Silva’s men in the English top-flight this season, starting 15 of Fulham’s 16 league games.

Last night, he opened his goal account for the season, heading home from Harry Wilson’s cross in the first half to help Fulham retake the lead.

Fulham’s win against Burnley at Turf Moor tonight was their first in 74 years across a run of 34 games.

Before the fixture last night, the Cottagers’ last win at Turf Moor came in April 1951.

The former Rangers defender revealed he and his teammates were made aware of the record before the game, and it added a bit more incentive to their quest for all three points.

“Yes, it’s a relief, 100%,” the former Ajax man told Premier League Productions in his post-match interview as monitored by Soccernet.ng.

“First, I want to thank God, it was a big one, we really needed a win, and of course, 74 years, we try not to think about it.

“We got reminded about it, but we tried not to think about it. We just played our game, and we needed that.

Away from Bassey, Marco Silva will also be without Samuel Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi for the next month as the trio will be representing Nigeria at the AFCON tournament in Morocco.

“We just try to give our best, and we’re fortunate to be playing,” Bassey said about his absence from the Fulham squad for the next month.

“If you see our squad, you’d know we have amazing players. We’ll be missed, but they’ll be fine.

“I enjoyed the goal a lot. I haven’t scored for a long time. I’ve been working on celebrations, but I hadn’t had a goal in a while, so I was really happy to get one.”
