Thomas Tuchel, who has never managed a national team in his managerial career, will start his reign as the Three Lions of England coach on January 1, 2025.
The 51-year-old German tactician will be the third non-British permanent manager of the men’s team, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Thomas Tuchel’s assistant coach will be English coach Anthony Barry.
This announcement comes after Gareth Southgate’s resignation in July, following England’s defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
In the interim, Lee Carsley was appointed as the manager and will remain in charge for the upcoming Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland in November.
The Football Association revealed that Tuchel was the “preferred candidate” after interviewing several potential candidates.
The decision was approved by the FA board last week, and Tuchel signed a contract on October 8, 2024. The FA delayed the announcement to minimize distraction during the recently concluded international camp.
After the FA announced his appointment as England’s new coach, Thomas Tuchel said: “I am very proud to have been given the honor of leading the England team.
“I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.
“To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”
