Ex-Justice Umeadi urges IPMC to focus on preventive maintenance as a key strategy

In a powerful address delivered at the inauguration ceremony of the Institute for Promotion of Maintenance Culture (IPMC) at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ex-Justice of Anambra State, Prof. Peter Umeadi emphasized the urgent need to cultivate a maintenance culture in Nigeria across all sectors of society.

The event gathered dignitaries, professionals, and stakeholders eager to address the critical challenge of infrastructure decay and its broader implications for the nation.

Umeadi underscored that maintenance is not merely an afterthought but a foundational principle necessary for success in various fields, including education, health, infrastructure, and public welfare.

He shared a personal anecdote about a harrowing journey on the Asaba-Onitsha Expressway, where poor road conditions led to a near-fatal accident.

“Your summarized mission statement is ‘Maintain to Sustain,’” Umeadi declared. He urged the IPMC to adopt a bold, focused approach, holding individuals and organizations accountable for negligence and decay.

He proposed that the IPMC should actively engage in legal actions against authorities responsible for the maintenance of federal roads, citing Section 344 of Nigeria’s Criminal Code, which holds parties accountable for omissions that lead to harm.

Highlighting the intrinsic value of maintenance within African culture, Umeadi reflected on traditional practices that emphasize repair and care. He noted the resilience of historical structures, such as Roman roads still in use today, as examples of what a robust maintenance culture can achieve.
Umeadi also called for a nationwide initiative to educate citizens on the importance of maintaining their vehicles and properties.

He pointed out the pervasive issue of poorly maintained public buildings and flags, emphasizing that neglect in these areas diminishes national pride and public safety.

“The IPMC has the opportunity to unite us by fostering patriotism through proper care of our national symbols,” he said, encouraging the institute to address the poor condition of the national flag in public spaces as a starting point.

The justice concluded his address by urging the IPMC to focus on preventive maintenance as a key strategy, drawing attention to the pressing need for clean drinking water and safe roads. “Water is life, and without it, we cannot maintain hygiene,” he asserted, highlighting the government’s role in ensuring access to essential services.
