Former Stoke City and Super Eagles midfielder, Oluwaseyi George Olofinjana, has revealed the Nigerian football team can still qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a poor start to their qualifiers, Soccernet.ng reports.

Eric Chelle’s side have won just one of their six World Cup qualifying games in a campaign that has seen the Super Eagles field three different coaches.

With four games left to seal a spot in the World’s biggest footballing tournament next year, Olofinjana revealed how Nigeria can qualify.

“With the remaining fixtures, it’s still mathematically possible to qualify. However, we have to earn that right. Honestly, with the way things stand, Nigeria shouldn’t be thinking about the World Cup.

“Even if we qualify now, we’ll start preparing again and end up crashing out in the group stage or the second round. There has to be real passion and purpose behind our football,” Olofinjana said in an interview with Brila.

The 44-year-old compared the Super Eagles to the Moroccan squad for their campaign during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, revealing everyone was proud of the passion and purpose the AFCON 2025 hosts put on show in Qatar.

“They didn’t win the tournament, but even as a Nigerian, I was proud of how Morocco performed. That’s what true passion and dedication to the game looks like,” the former Hull City midfielder concluded.

Nigeria resume their World Cup qualifying campaign in September, taking on Rwanda on the first day of the month before travelling to South Africa to take on Bafana Bafana a week later.
