The town of Offa in Kwara State was rocked by explosions late Thursday, destroying properties and triggering panic among residents.
The blasts coincided with a series of air strikes carried out by the United States on ISIS terrorists in Sokoto.
The distance between Offa and Sokoto is approximately 540 kilometres by air.
Reports indicate that the first explosion affected several buildings around a Muslim praying ground, while the second occurred near Solid Worth Hotel, about a five-minute walk from the first site.
Authorities reportedly discovered an undetonated explosive device at the second location, prompting increased security measures.
The exact source and nature of the explosions remain unclear, according to local reports.
Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, police spokesperson for Kwara State, told journalists that the incident occurred around 10 pm.
“Investigations are ongoing of that incident to ascertain what exactly happened, if it is an explosion or not,” Ejire-Adeyemi said.
“Discrete Investigations are ongoing to reveal what happened precisely. Please be patient.”
In a separate statement, Abiola Babatunde, chief press secretary to the Offa LGA chairman, confirmed the council’s awareness of the situation.
Babatunde added that the affected areas had been cordoned off by security agencies to allow for thorough investigation.
