The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has resumed direct revenue collection at the cargo terminals of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, marking the first time in 15 years that the agency will oversee real-time revenue collection from cargo operations.

In a statement signed on Friday by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN said officials from its Directorate of Cargo Development and Services (DCDS) are now stationed at the cargo release points of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) and Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) warehouses to supervise collections.

The move follows months of stakeholder engagement led by the Director of Cargo Development and Services, Mr. Lekan Thomas, and the Airport Manager, Mr. A. Tewa, with the backing of FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, in collaboration with the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

Working closely with the PTML Customs Area Command under Comptroller T. Awe, the initiative has already begun to block revenue leakages and ensure greater accountability across the air cargo value chain.

FAAN described the development as a landmark achievement that demonstrates its commitment to operational efficiency, transparency, and inter-agency collaboration in the aviation sector.

According to the statement, the resumption of direct collection will not only enhance FAAN’s revenue performance but also improve the ease of doing business at Nigeria’s busiest airport.

The agency expressed optimism that the breakthrough at MMIA would serve as a model for replication at other airports nationwide.
