Peseiro was a target for Algeria after his impressive performance with Nigeria at the AFCON, but those talks seem to have ended

The Algerian FA are set to announce the appointment of Vladimir Petkovic as the new coach of their male senior national team, Soccernet.ng reports.

Under the tutelage of Djamel Belmadi, Algeria performed poorly at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. They exited the competition in the group stage after picking just two points from two games.

After their exit, Algeria parted ways with Belmadi, and there were talks linking them with a move for Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro, who led the team to a second-place finish. However, all those talks will be put to bed now with Petkovic’s imminent appointment.

Meanwhile, Peseiro’s future is still in the balance, as his contract expired after the end of the AFCON. But with Algeria looking at appointing Petkovic, it is likely that Peseiro will be appointed as coach.

This would be good news for the Super Eagles because of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers later this year. Appointing a new coach for the Super Eagles would cost the NFF a lot of money, except it’s an indigenous coach.

With Algeria now out of the way, Peseiro’s options are now reduced, and since he has been working with the Super Eagles for the last two years, it would be easier for him to accept the job.

What do you think? Is Algeria’s decision to look elsewhere a good omen for Nigeria?
