The Communist Party of Benin (PCB) has vehemently condemned what it described as a “foreign military intervention” in the country, following the reported aborted military coup d’état on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party insisted that the deployment of foreign troops – reportedly from France and Nigeria – severely compromised Benin’s sovereignty and was an “insult and humiliation” to the nation’s political and military institutions.
While reiterating its firm, long-standing opposition to military takeovers, the PCB stated that the failed putsch was a predictable result of the current government’s actions.
“The Communist Party of Benin, in all its political stances, has always opposed putschism as a mode of accession to power,” the statement read.
“However, the December 7 coup attempt is the logical consequence of the disastrous management of the ‘Rupture’ government, characterised by predation, fascist dictatorship, exclusion, and repeated institutional coups d’état since 2016.”
The party specifically blamed the alleged democratic decline under President Patrice Talon’s administration, pointing to what it described as a “monarchical Constitution” that restricts political expression and public participation.
The PCB warned that unless the current political situation is addressed, “it is foreseeable that such events will not fail to occur in the future.”
The PCB sharply criticised the reported involvement of external forces in neutralising the coup attempt, claiming the operation was successful primarily due to foreign military support.
The party alleged that the attempt was thwarted by “air strikes conducted by Nigerian fighter jets deployed from Lagos State” and the intervention of “French forces stationed in Benin.”
Citing unverified information, the PCB claimed French President Emmanuel Macron had requested Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, to intervene.
The party further alleged that additional Nigerian ground forces entered Benin through the Sèmè border to reinforce the operation.
The PCB argued that the reported foreign military action was tantamount to a total loss of national control.
“This event is extremely serious… It represents the placement of our country under supervision; a pure and simple transformation of Benin into a French colony,” the party declared.
Reiterating its stance that Benin’s internal issues must be resolved domestically, the Communist Party of Benin demanded the immediate withdrawal of all foreign forces.
“The PCB condemns this Franco-Nigerian intervention in our country and demands the immediate departure of the foreign forces of aggression,” the Party declared.
