Falola to be honoured at Adeyemi Federal University

This recognition will be conferred during the university’s 35th convocation ceremony, including awarding degrees, certificates, diplomas, and prizes to graduates from the 2017 to 2023 academic sessions.

Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), formerly known as Adeyemi College of Education, is a prominent federal institution located in Ondo City, Ondo State, Nigeria. Established in 1963 and commencing operations on May 22, 1964, with an initial cohort of 93 students, the institution was named in honor of Canon M.C. Adeyemi, a notable educationist in the region. Its primary mission was to train qualified teachers for secondary schools and teacher training colleges, as well as to conduct research on teaching methodologies across various educational levels in Nigeria.

Over the years, AFUED has evolved into a comprehensive university offering a range of academic programs. The university comprises five main schools: Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Languages, Sciences, and Vocational and Technical Education, encompassing a total of 28 academic departments. It maintains an affiliation with Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, for its degree programs.

The transition from a college to a university was formalised in December 2021 when the National Assembly passed the Adeyemi Federal University Establishment Bill, which was subsequently signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari. This honorary doctorate from AFUED adds to Professor Falola’s (Africa’s most decorated humanity scholar) impressive list of accolades, including his 27th honorary doctorate recently awarded by the North-West University in South Africa. His prolific contributions to African history, culture, and education have solidified his reputation as one of the continent’s most influential intellectuals.
