FAM Under Fire Over S3xual Misconduct Allegations During Scorchers SA Tour

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has instituted a formal investigation following disturbing allegations of sexual misconduct involving a member of the Malawi Women’s National Football Team (The Scorchers) delegation during recent international engagements.

The move follows a chilling exposé by Zambian sports news outlet, BolaNews, in which one of the victims, a female member of the Scorchers technical panel, detailed a harrowing encounter involving a FAM executive member, identified as Daudi Mtanthiko.

According to the report, the incident occurred after Malawi’s second match in South Africa, where the Scorchers faced Banyana Banyana. The victim recounted that the official initially sent her messages asking her to visit his hotel room under the pretense of offering her shopping money.

“He said I should see him in his room to get some money for shopping and told me the door was open. I refused,” she said.

The situation escalated later that evening when the official allegedly forced his way into her room.

“At around 7 p.m., I heard a knock. When I opened, it was him. He forced his way in, closed the door, removed his trousers, and pushed me onto the bed. He said we should have sex. I refused. He then begged, saying ‘Help me since it can’t be possible for me to return to my room charged like this,’” she revealed.

The victim said she continued to resist, refusing even a kiss or hug, and when she threatened to call for help, the official left her room.

Similar reports of sexual advances by the same FAM official were made by another female staff member during the team’s trip to Zambia in February. These repeated incidents have sparked public outrage and demands for accountability within Malawi’s football governing body.

In response, FAM released a statement assuring the public that the matter is being taken seriously and will be thoroughly investigated.

“FAM has instituted a formal inquiry to investigate and make findings on the matter. This process will be undertaken pursuant to applicable rules and policies that ensure fairness and justice for all parties involved,” reads the statement.

The football body further emphasized its commitment to the safety, dignity, and well-being of all its players and staff, in line with its safeguarding policy.

As the investigation proceeds, the official in question has not yet been publicly suspended or named by FAM, despite being identified in media reports. The case continues to attract widespread attention, with calls for stronger safeguarding measures in sports institutions.
