PLANS to unveil the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a unified platform for Nigeria’s opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections faced an unexpected obstacle today.
Just hours before the high-profile event was set to commence, the Wells Carlton Hotel and Apartments in Asokoro, Abuja, abruptly canceled the fully paid reservation, citing an “internal compliance matter.”
The event was anticipated to formally present the ADC as a coalition vehicle to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, the hotel management issued a last-minute notice, stating their inability to proceed with hosting the gathering.
A message shared by media personality and politician Dele Momodu on Instagram quoted the hotel as saying:
“We sincerely regret to inform you that due to an internal compliance matter that has just come to our attention, we are unable to proceed with hosting your scheduled event… We deeply apologise for the timing and inconvenience this may cause.”
The sudden cancellation drew immediate criticism from opposition leaders. Momodu alleged political interference, stating,
“The intimidation of opposition by a jittery government continues… the Management of the hotel suddenly canceled the venue booking due to fears of backlash from APC operatives.”
Salihu Lukman, representing the organisers People and Passion Consult Ltd, condemned the hotel’s action as a breach of contract, asserting that the agreement was legally binding and fully paid for.
“This is unacceptable… You must meet the terms of the contract fully by allowing the event to hold. This is not negotiable,” he declared.
The ADC unveiling was expected to draw several heavyweight politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former governors Aminu Tambuwal, Sule Lamido, Liyel Imoke, and Sam Egwu.
Other key figures reportedly involved include Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and ex-Minister Rotimi Amaechi.
Despite the setback, opposition leaders vowed to press ahead with their plans to challenge the APC’s dominance in the 2027 polls.
