The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, Ahmed Abubakar, over an alleged attempt to procure ammunition intended for bandits operating in Zamfara State.
According to intelligence obtained by a security analyst, Zagazola Makama, Abubakar, a native of Gusau and resident of Anguwan Dodo in Gwagwalada, Abuja, was apprehended on December 7 around 3:30 p.m. by operatives from the Mabushi Division.
Security sources who spoke with Makama said Abubakar had allegedly approached a Nigerian Army corporal, Yusuf Mohammed, in a bid to obtain 1,000 rounds of live ammunition. He claimed the bullets were to be delivered to bandit groups in Zamfara in exchange for cash.
During initial interrogation, Abubakar reportedly admitted that he was acting under the instruction of his uncle, one Ahmed Yakubu, who is said to have fled and is now being sought by the authorities.
The police also recovered ₦170,100 from the suspect, believed to be part of the money earmarked for the illicit ammunition deal.
The FCT Police Command confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and assisting investigators, while a manhunt has been launched for his uncle and other possible accomplices.
The Command reiterated its commitment to stamping out arms trafficking and urged the public to report suspicious activities promptly.
