The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rolled out a major security operation across Abuja, deploying 2,202 police officers to safeguard residents and visitors during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The move follows a directive by the Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, who ordered heightened security at places of worship and other public locations as part of the 2025 festive season operational order.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, the police said officers have been strategically stationed at churches, mosques, recreational and event centres, major highways, motor parks and other busy public spaces across the territory.
“As we gradually transition into 2026, the FCT Police Command remains resolute in its commitment to sustaining peace, safety, and public order across the Territory,” the statement read.
“In furtherance of this mandate, the command has deployed 2,202 personnel across the FCT in line with the 2025 festive season operational order. This proactive deployment is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, secure, and hitch-free celebration for all residents and visitors.
“Police personnel have been strategically positioned at places of worship, recreational and event centres, major highways, motor parks, and other public spaces. These deployments are complemented by increased visibility policing and intelligence-led patrols.”
The command also confirmed that known black spots, uncompleted buildings and shanties considered vulnerable to criminal exploitation are under close surveillance. Where necessary, such locations are being raided to prevent criminal activity.
“Identified black spots, uncompleted buildings, and shanties that may be exploited by criminal elements are being closely monitored and, where necessary, raided to forestall criminal activities,” Adeh said.
“Tactical units, rapid response squads, and patrol teams are actively engaged, supported by intensified vehicular and foot patrols across the FCT.
“The command is also working in close collaboration with sister security agencies to ensure comprehensive and coordinated security coverage throughout the festive period.”
She added that Explosive Ordnance Disposal units have been deployed to conduct routine security sweeps at worship centres and other large gathering points, in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police.
The Commissioner of Police also urged residents to remain vigilant, obey the law and promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through the FCT Police Command emergency lines.
Security concerns typically rise during the festive season nationwide, as increased travel, public gatherings and commercial activity create opportunities for crime.
