FCT: Two officers killed, three injured as Shiites, police clash

The spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident, which occurred today, describing the attack as unprovoked. She also accused the group of destroying three police patrol vehicles.

Adeh reported that the IMN members attacked officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the FCT command at Wuse Junction near a traffic light.

“The FCT police command confirms an unprovoked attack by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, known as the ‘Shi’ite’ group, on officers of the Nigeria Police Force at Wuse Junction near the traffic light. The attack resulted in the deaths of two police personnel, left three others unconscious, and led to the destruction of three police patrol vehicles.”

The police spokesperson also mentioned that the attackers were armed with machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives.

“The proscribed organization launched an unprovoked attack on the police checkpoint, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives,” the statement read.

In response to the incident, the FCT Police Commissioner, Benneth Igweh, condemned the attack.

He noted that several arrests have been made and vowed to ensure that all those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.

According to the statement, the situation is now under control, and police operatives have restored normalcy to the area.

“Several arrests have been made, and the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemns the unprovoked attack on police officers. He promises to bring those involved to justice. The situation is currently under control, and normalcy has been restored,” the police spokesperson stated.

She also mentioned that the FCT Police Command would provide further updates to the public as the situation develops.
