THE Federal Government has shut down 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating across the country.
According to the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), the institutions were discovered and closed during a recent nationwide crackdown on unaccredited tertiary institutions.
The commission disclosed the development as part of its recent achievements, which also included a personnel audit and financial monitoring exercise across all 21 federal Colleges of Education.
This move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to education regulatory bodies, including the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), to eliminate “certificate millers” undermining the integrity of Nigeria’s higher education system.
Speaking at the 14th convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja, the President—represented by the Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Rakiya Ilyasu—warned against compromising academic standards.
Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration among education agencies such as the NYSC, JAMB, NUC, NBTE, and NCCE to ensure quality assurance, tackle forgery, and curb the spread of unrecognized institutions within and outside Nigeria.
