THE Federal Government has announced Friday, September 5, 2025, as a public holiday in commemoration of Eid-ul-Mawlid, the birth of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The announcement was made in a statement today by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Extending warm felicitations to Muslims in Nigeria and across the globe, the Minister urged the faithful to reflect on the Prophet’s virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.
He emphasized that these values remain essential for building a united, progressive, and prosperous nation.
Tunji-Ojo also encouraged Nigerians of all religious backgrounds to use the occasion to pray for the country’s peace, security, and stability, while supporting government efforts to foster unity and national development.
Highlighting the significance of the celebration, the Minister said Eid-ul-Mawlid provides “another opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and imbibe the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity.”
He further called on citizens to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of government policies aimed at collective well-being, while wishing Muslims a joyous and peaceful celebration.
Observed in the Islamic month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, Eid-ul-Mawlid is marked globally with prayers, lectures, processions, and acts of charity.
In Nigeria, it is officially recognized as a national holiday, reflecting a long-standing tradition of honouring major Islamic festivals.
