THE Federal Government has dismissed circulating reports suggesting that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) has been scrapped, insisting that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) remains the only authorized body for coordinating admissions into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, the government clarified that no directive or announcement had been made to abolish the UTME, urging the public to disregard such claims.
“For the avoidance of doubt, JAMB remains the statutory and legally empowered body responsible for conducting entrance examinations and overseeing admissions into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” the statement read in part.
“The existing admission process through JAMB remains fully in place, and any contrary information should be ignored.”
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, also reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with JAMB and other educational agencies to ensure transparency, fairness, and merit-based admissions across the country.
He emphasized the Federal Government’s determination to maintain the integrity of the nation’s tertiary admission process.
Meanwhile, the Ministry noted that recent admission policy reforms now allow candidates without a credit in Mathematics in their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) to qualify for certain programmes in the Faculty of Arts.
According to the government, this measure aims to expand access to higher education for more Nigerian students.
