NIGERIA is gearing up to celebrate its 64th Independence Day on October 1, 2024, and the Federal Government is commemorating the occasion by highlighting the country’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy. This milestone is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Nigerian people to uphold freedom and liberty for future generations.
According to Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, Nigeria has made significant progress since gaining independence in 1960, evolving into a leading force in Africa and a respected voice globally. Despite facing numerous challenges, Nigeria has demonstrated strength and capacity, remaining committed to democratic values.
The government is initiating transformative reforms to reposition Nigeria’s economy, including local government autonomy and economic reforms such as the removal of petroleum subsidies and transitioning to Compressed Natural Gas. These reforms aim to reduce transportation costs, attract investment, and stabilize the macroeconomic environment.
In education, the newly established Nigerian Education Loan Fund will make tertiary education more accessible to young Nigerians. The government is also supporting small businesses through grants and financial incentives.
Idris commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its visionary leadership, particularly in seeking a Supreme Court verdict to implement local government autonomy, a significant step towards grassroots governance.
The minister acknowledged the challenges posed by the current economic reforms but reassured Nigerians that the sacrifices being made will soon bear fruit. “There is light at the end of the tunnel. Our sacrifices will not be in vain,” he said.
The government has also recorded successes in the fight against insecurity and a steady decline in inflation. The National Values Charter, aimed at fostering moral, ethical, and cultural reawakening, will soon be implemented.
The Minister concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain united and committed to building a nation that stands as a beacon for black people worldwide. The press briefing marked the start of a series of events leading up to Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration.
