The Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru, says the Federal Government is strengthening intelligence integration across the armed forces as Nigeria confronts rapidly evolving security challenges.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday at the opening of the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI) Annual Conference 2025, Badaru said President Bola Tinubu remained committed to securing the country.
He noted that Nigeria now faces adversaries who exploit technology, operate within civilian environments and blend actions across physical and digital domains.
According to him, “Threats are no longer defined by terrain or manpower, but by the speed, precision and depth of information we can access and act upon.”
The minister praised the Defence Intelligence Agency for integrating advanced technology into intelligence operations, especially through the deployment of the Joint Intelligence Mission Data and Analytics System (JIMDAS) and enhanced cyber-monitoring capabilities.
He described the systems as “force multipliers” that have improved real-time coordination between the DIA, service headquarters, and troops in the field.
Badaru, however, stressed that technology must be complemented by rigorous personnel training.
“Technology is a tool. It is the trained, disciplined and dedicated intelligence officer who transforms raw data into national defence,” he said.
He said the Ministry of Defence would continue to invest heavily in training analysts, cyber operators and commanders to ensure optimal use of emerging technologies.
Badaru emphasised the importance of deeper collaboration among West African countries, noting that cross-border intelligence sharing, maritime security coordination and protection of critical infrastructure were vital to regional stability.
The four-day conference, which brings together Defence Attachés, Advisers and State Office Coordinators, adopts what Badaru described as a “bottom-up approach” to intelligence reform.
He urged participants to challenge existing assumptions, think boldly and offer actionable recommendations that could translate into operational improvements.
“Your duty is sacred. Your mission is national. Through vigilance, adaptation and unity, we will secure the future of our great country,” he said.
The conference is expected to explore multi-source intelligence, emerging technologies and strategies to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture.
