The Federal Government has issued a fresh flood alert to nine states in northern Nigeria, warning residents of likely heavy rainfall and possible flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025.
The National Flood Early Warning Center (FEW Center) of the Federal Ministry of Environment, in a circular signed by the Director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, raised the alarm on Monday in Abuja.
According to the alert, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Borno States have been placed on red alert due to their vulnerability to flooding. Communities within these states were advised to take precautionary measures.
Adamawa and Katsina recorded the highest number of towns listed on the watchlist. In Adamawa, Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo were highlighted, while Katsina town, Kaita, and Bindawa made the list in Katsina State. Jigawa’s Gwaram, Gombe’s Nafada, Borno’s Ngala, Kano’s Sumaila, Zamfara’s Anka, Sokoto’s Makira, as well as Bauchi’s Azare and Jama’are, were also included.
The circular urged stakeholders across the affected states to closely monitor developments and provide timely feedback to the Center.
Bokani noted that the alert followed recent patterns of heavy rainfall across the North and stressed the need for early preventive action to reduce the impact on lives and property.
Last week, the FEW Center issued a separate flood warning to seven northern states and cautioned communities along the River Niger floodplain, from Jebba to Lokoja, to consider evacuation due to rising water levels.
