FG Makes Promise On Reviewing New Minimum Wage In Less Than Two Years

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has assured Nigerian workers that the national minimum wage will be reviewed in less than two years.

Onyejeocha made this known on Thursday in Umuahia while addressing journalists after a meeting with labour leaders in Abia State.

The minister reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, emphasizing that the administration is determined to keep its promise of periodic reviews of the minimum wage.

“We are not going to allow minimum wage review to be forever. It used to be about five years, but now, in three years, which is less than two years from now, we will also review the minimum wage,” Onyejeocha stated.

Naijaonpoint recalled that President Tinubu approved a ₦70,000 minimum wage in July 2024 and pledged to review it every three years.

Onyejeocha, who hails from Abia State, described her meeting with labour leaders as a courtesy visit to her constituents after spending the holiday season in the state.

She urged the leaders to foster peace and stability in the workplace, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between labour and government.

“I reminded them that we should have a strike-free year, where we will be able to work with the government in partnership, knowing that if we are in peace, we will be more productive,” she said.

NLC Applauds Minister

The Abia State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ogbomna Okoro, commended the minister’s efforts and described her achievements as a source of pride for the labour movement.

“We are proud of her and will continue to collaborate with her to ensure the welfare of workers,” Okoro said.
