FG Moves To Regulate ACs, Refrigerators For Sustainability

The Federal Government has said efforts were on to ensure effective regulation of the country’s air conditioning systems and refrigerations.

Naijaonpoint reports that the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Mustapha Abdullahi, stated that the country has made significant progress in the National Energy Master Plan (NEMPS).

He stated this as part of the presentation he made at the Daikin Konwakai Summit in Belgium on Wednesday.

Abdullahi said a new energy standard policy for the country has been developed and approved by the government for air conditioners to have energy labels, a key step towards sustainability.

“Through collaboration with United Nations Environment Programmes (UNEP) and other agencies, new energy standards have been developed and approved by the Federal Government through the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in November 2024. These standards will enable the introduction of energy labels for air conditioners, a key step toward sustainability.

“Next year, we will unveil the Energy Efficient Cooling System, marking a major milestone in our commitment to a more sustainable future,” he said.

The Energy Commission of Nigerian DG noted that while the policy may face challenges in implementation, its intended results would boost the sustainable energy nation’s capacity.

“While we recognize challenges such as insufficient testing materials and facilities, we are dedicated to building the nation’s capacity.

“To this end, we are working assiduously to regulate air conditioning systems and develop new frameworks for refrigeration. I am confident that these efforts will yield significant progress soon.

“I assure our stakeholders that the Energy Commission remains committed to advancing sustainable and energy-efficient solutions, with full implementation of these standards by December 2025,” he added.
