The Nigerian government has begun a formal investigation into allegations that cross-dresser, Bobrisky received special privileges while serving a six-month prison sentence for abusing naira banknotes.
Naijaonpoint reports that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, ordered the probe after public concerns and media reports alleged that Bobrisky was treated differently from other inmates during his detention at the Kirikiri Maximum Custodial Centre in Lagos.
An independent investigative panel set up by the minister began its sitting on Monday, examining allegations of corruption, abuse of power, torture, and inhumane treatment within the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The inquiry will review the circumstances of Bobrisky’s case, determine if he served his full sentence, and assess whether his reported privileges breached prison regulations.
The panel’s mandate also includes examining broader issues within correctional facilities, identifying human rights violations, and recommending reforms to improve rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders.
The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, who chairs the panel, has already ordered the relocation of inmates from the Abeokuta correctional facility due to poor sanitary conditions and requested reports on other detention centres.
The controversy dates back to September 2024, when several officers at Kirikiri were suspended following allegations that Bobrisky stayed in a private apartment in prison and that officials collected bribes on his behalf.
Bobrisky had been arrested in April 2024, pleaded guilty to four counts of currency abuse, and was sentenced shortly afterwards.
The panel is expected to present its findings on the Bobrisky case within two weeks.
