THE Federal Government has unveiled plans to significantly improve land titling in Nigeria, aiming to increase the percentage of formally titled land to 50% over the next decade.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, made the announcement today during a land titling registration and documentation workshop held in Lagos.
He explained that the initiative seeks to modernise land administration, enhance property value, and make land a stronger asset for wealth creation, housing delivery, and inclusive growth, while states will continue to retain full control over land administration.
According to Dangiwa, more than 97% of land in Nigeria currently lacks formal titles, restricting its use as collateral for loans and diminishing its potential in property transactions.
The programme encourages states to digitise land registries, integrate geographic information systems, and adopt global best practices—steps already implemented in Lagos State.
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, lauded the move, stressing that electronic land documentation is the only sustainable path to reducing physical interference and ensuring secure land rights.
Officials from Oyo, Imo, Kogi, Enugu, Kano, Bauchi, Adamawa, Abia, Osun, and Borno states also attended the event, expressing readiness to collaborate with the Federal Government to achieve nationwide improvements in land titling across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
