FG to convert 774,000 petrol-powered bikes to electric

The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology has officially launched the Sustainable Energy Access Projects initiative, planning to convert 774,000 petrol-powered motorcycles to electric.

This is also as the ministry launched a 30-megawatt power facility in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Under the initiative, 1,000 motorcycles are to be converted in each of the 774 local government areas in the country.

In a statement on his X handle yesterday, the minister, Geoffrey Nnaji, said the SEAP initiative led by him “is aimed at delivering a minimum of 5 MW of clean and decentralised energy to each of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas, supporting agro-processing, healthcare, transport, and small businesses.”

At the event, an MOU was reportedly signed between ALGON, Data Analytics & Solutions International Ltd, and CCK Electric Power Technology Company to accelerate the rollout of SEAP nationwide.

“The project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and supports the national clean energy transition.

“SEAP includes the deployment of solar and gas-powered mini-grids to underserved LGAs; conversion of 1,000 petrol-powered tricycles per LGA to electric; replacement of firewood and charcoal cooking fuels with safer, affordable LPCNG cylinders for 20,000 households per LGA,” the statement read partly.

Nnaji described the initiative as “a transformative solution to Nigeria’s energy challenge, combining innovation, inclusion, and impact at scale.”

The ministry called on development partners, especially the United Nations Development Programme, to support SEAP’s implementation and help deliver meaningful change to the lives of women, youths, and underserved communities across Nigeria.
