The Federal Government says it will open the completed portion of Section 1 of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway to motorists between December 12 and 17, 2025.
Naijaonpoint reports that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this on Sunday during an inspection tour of the 700-km project.
He said Section 1 is nearing completion, with about two kilometres left to be fully delivered. The formal commissioning is expected in April 2026.
A total of 47.37 kilometres of the highway was inspected during the tour.
Speaking with journalists, Umahi commended the pace of work, describing the progress as encouraging.
He explained that construction was deliberately slowed in certain segments to allow proper subsoil settlement, noting that the measure was necessary to ensure the road’s structural stability and durability.
The minister praised Hitech Construction Company for its dedication, saying the firm had shown an “uncommon commitment” to the project, driven by motives that “go far beyond financial incentives.”
On funding, Umahi revealed that the foreign loan component for the coastal highway was oversubscribed by $100 million, an indication of strong investor confidence in both the project’s economic prospects and the ministry’s transparency.
The Managing Director of Hitech, Danny Aboud, said sand filling was progressing across critical swamp sections, while 34 to 35 kilometres of the concrete reinforced pavement had already been completed.
Beyond Section 1, the minister inspected a 25-km dual carriageway under construction between Eleko (near Dangote Cement, Ibeju-Lekki) and Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State; a major flyover at Chainage 47.474, designed to link Sections 1 and 2 of the coastal highway.
Umahi said 80% of the piling work on the interchange had been completed, and the structure was projected for delivery in the first quarter of 2026. He noted that the interchange would ease traffic flow to the Dangote Refinery and the surrounding port access roads.
Tinubu Engineering Mentorship Programme To Begin In January
The minister also announced the launch of the President Tinubu Engineering Mentorship Programme, set to begin in January.
The initiative will recruit civil engineers, electrical engineers, designers, and technicians from across Nigeria, offering hands-on experience on major federal projects such as the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto–Badagry Coastal Road, and other strategic infrastructure projects.
Umahi added that participants would receive start-up support and equipment after training, a move aimed at strengthening indigenous engineering capacity and reducing dependence on foreign expertise.
