THE federal government has completed plans to increase power generation to 6,000 megawatts from 4,000 MW by the end of 2024.
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, stated this today during the power’s oversight visit to the Federal Ministry of Power and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in Abuja by the Senate Committee.
The power minister bemoaned the country’s over-reliance on the national grid, noting that a new target of 10-12,000 transmission capacity has been set for the next three years.
Issues surrounding the recent increase in energy tariffs were deferred at this meeting, as the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, stated that an investigative hearing has already been arranged for April 29th to address major concerns around the policy.
He also asked the committee to help pressure the government to pay outstanding debts, which he said would considerably increase electricity supply.
According to him, the Tinubu-led administration is resolved to break the 4,000 MW jinx, which had existed for decades before his appointment as the 47th Minister of Power.
Leading members of the Senate Committee on Power, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, together with the Power Minister and other officials, inspected some projects before meeting with members and staff of Nigeria’s gearbox firm in a separate meeting.
The gathering focused on the country’s ongoing electrical grid failure.
According to the TCN, Nigeria has experienced six power grid collapses in 2024. Gas shortages for power generation, as well as vandalism of power equipment, are blamed for the country’s frequent grid collapses.
