Final Fantasy 9 "Tease" Posted By Square Enix, Fans Instantly Lose Their Minds

It is a truth universally acknowledged that gamers in possession of good sense must be in want of a Final Fantasy 9 remake. Have our dreams finally come true? Some fans certainly seem to think so following a recent post from Square Enix.

2025 marks 25 years since Final Fantasy 9 first released, and the occasion has, so far, been marked with a blog post and a crossover event for a free-to-play RPG. Some fun nods to the past, certainly, but not the announcement you might have been hoping for. Which is why a new post has really sent fans over the edge.

A Final Fantasy 9 Post From Square Enix Elicits Chaos

They must have known this would happen

A seemingly innocuous post from the official Final Fantasy Twitter account has turned fans hoping for Final Fantasy 9 remake news into frenzied monsters, so starved news as they are.

So, here’s what got everyone so riled up: a picture of Final Fantasy 9 protagonist Zidane Tribal with the caption: “You don’t need a reason to help people”.

Posting quotes like this with characters from Final Fantasy games is not something this official account seems to do regularly, but it does happen. The last one before this was of Yuna from Final Fantasy 10, posted November 15. Basically, then, posting a Zidane quote like this doesn’t seem to be too out of the ordinary.

That didn’t stop fans in the replies from getting excited, obviously. With the top reply being: “You don’t need a reason to announce the remake.”

One fan retweeted ..., adding: “Square posting this as if people haven’t been begging for a remake all year. You’re all sick.”

“At this point you are just playing with our feelings. Show the remake trailer,” a third fan begged.

A Final Fantasy 9 Remake Has Been Rumored

Just don’t get excited

To be fair to these poor fans, a Final Fantasy 9 remake has been rumored for some time now, so they aren’t reacting to Square’s post like this for no reason at all.

The game’s existence was first revealed as part of a huge NVIDIA leak. As of December 2025, the Final Fantasy 9 remake is the only Square Enix game from those leaks to have not been officially announced. So… is it real, or not?

A report from October this year suggests that Final Fantasy 9 did have a remake in development (hurray!) but that the remake has since been put on ice (not-so hurray).

For now, the fate of Final Fantasy 9s long-rumored remake remains up in the air. I don’t think we can fully count it out forever, personally. Clearly, the fervour for this fan-favorite entry is still there. We just need to keep the faith.
