Fire Guts Lagos Plank Market Goods Worth Millions Destroyed

Fire on Sunday gutted Oko Baba Plank Market in Ebute Metta, Lagos State, which resulted to the destruction of goods worth millions of Naira.

NaijaOnPoint.com.ng (NOP) gathered that the fire, which the cause and origin is yet to be ascertained consumed the primary plank market and significant parts of the shanties in the area.

The Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor, confirmed the incident, saying the fire was quickly curtailed following the prompt response of emergency responders to the scene.

He said no injury or life was lost in the fire incident.

“Upon arrival at the scene, it was observed that a plank market and shanties spread on a large expanse of land was engulfed by fire,” Okunbor said.

“The prompt intervention and coordinated efforts of the LRT, LRU Fire Unit and LASG Fire & Rescue Service curtailed the fire quickly.

“Collaborative efforts of responders at the scene contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to adjoining buildings before it was quickly subdued.”

He stated that the fire has been completely extinguished, adding that dampening down is in progress to prevent re-ignition.

Okunbor further stated that emergency responders have secured the entire area, while recovery operation is ongoing.

Emergency responders at the scene include the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).
