Flamingos fly to Algeria with Morocco 2025 in sight as Cameroon and Zambia aim to join Nigeria

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have departed for Algeria ahead of their crucial second-leg clash in the final qualifying round for the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports. 

The team is heading to Blida, where they will face Algeria on Thursday, 25 April, at the iconic Stade Mustapha Tchaker.

The match offers one of Africa’s five tickets to the World Cup, which will be hosted by Morocco from 17 October to 5 November.

Having already claimed an emphatic 4-0 win in the first leg at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, the Flamingos travel with a comfortable cushion.

The confident performance not only showed Nigeria’s attacking brilliance but also underlined their status as one of the continent’s most formidable forces in youth football. To secure qualification, the Flamingos must now maintain their composure and discipline in a potentially hostile atmosphere in Blida.

Motivation is high within the camp following a financial boost after the first-leg win.

Nigeria Football Federation President, Ibrahim Gusau, announced a N6 million cash reward for the players — N2 million from the NFF and N4 million donated by businessman Kunle Soname.

Despite a 4-0 win at home, the Nigeria Flamingos are not relaxed.

They are determined to finish the job in the second leg away in Algeria.

Gusau urged the girls to “play their hearts out” and seal qualification to continue Nigeria’s proud tradition at the U-17 World Cup.

Algeria, meanwhile, face an uphill task.

The North Africans must defeat Nigeria by four unanswered goals to force a penalty shootout and keep their hopes of a first-ever World Cup appearance alive.

But history is against them: the Flamingos have lost only once in 28 qualifying matches — a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ghana in 2008 — and have qualified for seven of the eight previous tournaments.

Elsewhere across Africa, the race for Morocco 2025 continues.

Zambia lead Benin 2-1 ahead of their second leg, Cameroon return home after a 1-0 first-leg win in Kenya, and Côte d’Ivoire head to Guinea with a 1-0 advantage as they chase their maiden World Cup qualification.
