Four-time capped Nigerian striker Isaac Success has urged the Super Eagles hierarchy to focus more on building the team’s overall cohesion rather than relying on individual brilliance if they are to stand a chance of salvaging their World Cup dreams, Footynaija.com reports.

Nigeria’s bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has not gone according to plan so far. The Super Eagles currently occupy fourth place in group C after playing six out of ten rounds of qualification matches.

A disappointing record of one win, four draws and one defeat leaves them trailing group C leaders South Africa by six points, with their hopes of avoiding a second consecutive no-show in football’s biggest tournament now hanging by a desperate thread.

One concerning issue is that despite the plethora of European based stars including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Wilfred Ndidi, Samuel Chukwueze, Simon Moses, to mention a few, the West African giants have still struggled to get the needed results.

What Success said

Osimhen’s brace fired Nigeria past Rwanda last week but his header was not enough to secure another win against Zimbabwe on Tuesday. Success, who believes the Super Eagles have relied on individual brilliance for too long, urged those in charge to focus on building a strong team.

“If you have a team aiming for a World Cup ticket, you have to make sure everyone is on the same page regarding what it takes for the country to qualify,” the former Watford man told Home Turf.

“If six players don’t know what they are doing, it rubs off on everyone. Two or three players – we don’t need to mention names – didn’t know why they were on the pitch, and it affected the rest of the team.

“We have been going forward due to individual brilliance. If we should focus on team empowerment, with the caliber of players we have, they can move mountains.”
