Sokoto State has been thrown into mourning following the passing of elder statesman and former federal lawmaker, Muhammad Mai Lato.
Until his death, he was the District Head of Wajake in Wamakko Local Government Area and a revered figure in Sokoto’s political and traditional circles.
Naijaonpoint understands that the late Mai Lato died last Thursday in Abuja after a prolonged illness.
He was 84 years old. His remains were laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites, and tributes have continued to pour in from leaders, clerics, and members of the community.
A special Fidda’u prayer marking the third day of mourning was held on Monday in Gumbi town, Wamakko LGA, with dignitaries and hundreds of mourners in attendance.
The Fidda’u prayer was led by renowned Islamic scholar and Sarkin Malaman Sokoto, Sheikh Yahaya na Malam Boyi, alongside a host of respected clerics. The solemn event served as both a spiritual observance and a tribute to the late district head’s enduring influence.
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, led the state delegation to the event, flanked by notable political figures including Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko (APC leader and former governor), Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tukur Bala Bodinga, Deputy Speaker, Kabir Ibrahim Kware, and Hon. Sani Yakubu, member representing Gudu–Tangaza Federal Constituency.
Others present included Secretary to the State Government Muhammad Bello Sifawa, APC State Vice Chairman Hassan Dangote, commissioners, local government chairmen, senior aides, political associates, ulama, and sympathisers from across the state.
Mai Lato served as a member of the Federal House of Representatives during Nigeria’s Second Republic. After his tenure in national politics, he continued to serve his people in a traditional capacity as the District Head of Wajake.
He was known for his deep commitment to community development, education, and religious harmony. His contributions to both legislative progress and grassroots development earned him the admiration of many across Sokoto State.
The late Mai Lato is survived by three wives and twenty-two children. His family, deeply rooted in traditional and religious values, continues to receive condolences from across the country.
