Senator Isa Abonyi Obaro, a distinguished legal luminary and veteran politician who represented the Okehi/Okene district during Nigeria’s Second Republic (1979–1983), has reportedly passed away.
Senator Obaro, who served under the banner of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), represented the area then known as Kwara South Senatorial District (which now constitutes Kogi Central).
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State has expressed his condolences, describing the late senator’s passing as a significant loss not only to his family and Kogi Central but to the entire state. The Governor praised him as a “distinguished statesman and patriot.”
Senator Obaro was celebrated as a bridge-builder and dedicated advocate for the Ebira people, with a long and impactful career in both the civil service and politics.
Before venturing into politics, Obaro had an illustrious career in the Federal Civil Service from 1958 to 1960 and later in private legal practice between 1963–1968 and 1975–1979.
He also held key positions as commissioner in the Kwara State Executive Council from 1968 to 1975, demonstrating unwavering commitment to public service.
During his tenure in the Senate, Senator Obaro served on the Committee on Trade and Industries and contributed to numerous legislative initiatives aimed at advancing the welfare of his constituency.
The late Senator was born on August 20, 1934, in Okene.
