Four Killed As Explosion Rocks Mining Site In Niger State, Several Others Injured

An explosion at a mining site in Sabon Pegi, located in the Mashegun Local Government Area of Niger State, has resulted in at least one fatality and left several others injured.

The explosion occurred on Sunday morning as miners resumed work at the site.

According to the police, one was killed while six others were injured.

The police suspect the explosion was caused by dynamites.

A statement issued by the spokesperson for the state police command, Wasiu Abiodun, said, “On January 26th, 2025 at about 7.30am, there was an explosion of some suspected dynamites at Sabon-Pegi, Mashegu LGA which was reportedly kept in a residential area by one Yushau for a purported mining activity.

“The explosion led to the unfortunate death of one Fatima Sadauki, while six others were injured and taken to general hospital Kainji for medical attention.

“The incident affected about twelve houses in the area and the Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command CP Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman has ordered for an investigation into the incident, dispatched EOD-CBRN unit to the scene for assessment, but the said Yushau is currently at large.

“However, normalcy has been restored in the area while monitoring continues.”

The incident comes exactly a week after scores of people including a pregnant woman were killed in a tanker explosion at Dikko in Niger State.

Last weekend, SaharaReporters reported a tragic tanker explosion that occurred near Dikko Junction along Minna Road, killing at least 98 people injuring scores of others.
