The 2023 presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has asserted that the police attacked them during the protest demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, because they were peaceful protesters.

Naijaonpoint reports that Sowore, the convener of the #FreeNnamdi Kanu’s protest, alongside other Nigerians, protested at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on Monday over the prolonged detention of the IPOB leader.

Speaking on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ programme on Monday, Sowore condemned the police attack on them.

According to the human rights activist, the police would not come near them if they were bandits.

He said, “The protest was not only on social media. It happened everywhere around Abuja. We had six spots where we had thousands of people converge en-masse.

“We were at Utako, Gudu, Apo, which has largest crowd, and we moved to the FCT police command where we were tear-gassed ruthlessly.

“Police attacked us because we were peaceful protesters. If we were bandits, they would not come near us.

“Fortunately, we have chosen a no-violence approach to resolving issues but a generation will come that will not accept this nonsense.”
