NOVAK Djokovic, the record 24-time Grand Slam champion, began his campaign at the 2025 French Open in Paris with a straight sets victory today.

The 38-year-old Serb saw off Mackie McDonald 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to ease into the second round.

Also in the men’s singles today, 2024 finalist Alex Zverev joined Djokovic in round 2 with a 6-3 6-3 6-4 victory over Learner Tien.

Also, rising star and world No.2 Coco Gauff, finalist in both WTA 1000 clay-court tournaments this season, cruised into the women’s singles second round, defeating Olivia Gadecki 6-2, 6-2.

There were however a few Roland Garros upsets on Tuesday as Daniil Medvedev and Ons Jabeur were sent packing.

After leading two sets to love, Cam Norrie came back from 3-5 down in the fifth set to beat former world No.1 Medvedev 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 7-5 in almost four hours.

Tunisia’s Jabeur, a three-time Grand Slam women’s singles finalist, was dispatched by Magdalena Frech 7-6, 6-0 in their first round clash.

In other matches on Tuesday, 19-year-old Jakub Mensik secured a 7-5, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 win against the in-form Alex Muller, while Elsa Jacquemot gave France their second women’s singles win of the week by beating former No.3 Maria Sakkari 6-3, 7-6.

Sakkari served twice for the second set and had two set points but double faulted on match point.

Alex De Minaur also beat Laslo Djere 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 to reach the second round, while
Hailey Baptiste defeated former French Open semi-finalist Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

Former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka was the first winner of a busy French Open day, defeating former Grand Slam semi-finalist Yanina Wickmayer 6-0, 6-0 in 48 minutes.
