The High Court of Abia State has again stopped the proposed local government congresses scheduled by the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party, planned as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Naijaonpoint reports that the court stance comes after Abure-led NWC, after a meeting last week in Abuja, reaffirmed its members’ positions and announced congress timetables across the country.
Meanwhile, the Nenadi Usman-led leadership, in a statement issued by the interim National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Ife Salako, said the High Court of Abia State sitting in Isiala Ngwa granted an interim order on November 26, 2025, in Suit No: HIN/47/2025.
The order, obtained by Hon. Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti, restrains Abure and what the statement described as his illegal National Working Committee from going ahead with their purported and unlawful ward, local government and state congresses.
The statement reads, “The general public, particularly all Labour Party supporters across the country, is hereby notified that on 26th November, 2025, the High Court of Abia State sitting in Isiala Ngwa granted an interim order in Suit No: HIN/47/2025.
“The order, sought by Hon. (Sir) Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti, restrains Barr. Julius Abure and his illegal National Working Committee from proceeding with their purported and unlawful ward, local government, and state congresses.
“The Labour Party, therefore, urges its teeming members nationwide to completely disregard the so-called congresses being promoted by Julius Abure and his associates.
“These illegal exercises have already been declared null and void by a court of competent jurisdiction. As a law-abiding political party, we enjoin all our members to respect and comply with the court’s directive.
“The Labour Party congresses will commence soon, and members will be duly informed once the details are finalised.”
The party also called on the Inspector-General of Police, who is the 6th Defendant/Respondent in the suit, to act on the court order.
It urged the IGP to ensure the arrest and prosecution of anyone organising or participating in any purported Labour Party congresses scheduled for 2nd, 4th, or 6th December, or on any other dates, except such activities are duly authorised by the legitimate leadership of the Party headed by Senator Usman.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), listed as the 7th Defendant/Respondent in the matter, was also cautioned.
The party advised INEC to dissociate itself from this illegality being orchestrated by individuals determined to tarnish the hard-earned reputation of the Commission.
It added that, in line with the Electoral Act and other relevant laws, the Labour Party would formally notify INEC of its “authentic activities” once its timetable for congresses and conventions is released.
