Fresh details have emerged over the land dispute in Abuja that triggered a heated confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lt. A.M. Yerima, earlier in the week.
Sources told The Nation that representatives of former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (retd.), visited the Federal Capital Territory Administration on Wednesday with documents relating to the contentious parcel of land.
The meeting, reportedly facilitated by the Nigerian Navy, was attended by Gambo’s private lawyer and officials of Santos Nigeria Limited, the company that sold the 2.5-acre plot to the retired naval chief in 2020.
A source familiar with the engagement said the delegation “presented all relevant papers already submitted and acknowledged” by the office of Mukthar Galadima, Director of Development Control.
Naijaonpoint understands that the controversy escalated on Tuesday when Wike confronted Navy Lt. Yerima at Plot 1946, Gaduwa District, Abuja.
The minister, who arrived with officials of the FCTA, accused the officer and his men of blocking access to the site where construction was ongoing.
The operatives reportedly stopped Development Control staff earlier in the day when they attempted to enforce a stop-work order.
Viral videos showed a visibly angered Wike engaging in a tense verbal exchange with Lt. Yerima, who repeatedly insisted that he was acting on “orders from above,” believed to be from the former naval chief.
Wike rejected the justification, questioning the military’s involvement in guarding a private property under development without FCTA approval.
