The Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, resonated with renewed purpose on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reintroduced its prestigious Annual Lecture Series after a brief hiatus.
The event, themed “Road Safety Management and Emerging Transportation Trends: Global Partnership for Optimal Performance”, brought together leaders from government, law, academia, security, and international organisations to deliberate on the future of road safety in Nigeria.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, mni, who has been described as a reform-driven leader, said the revival of the Lecture Series was more than ceremonial.
“This is not about prestige. It is about people. It is about lives lost daily to preventable crashes, the families devastated, and the urgent responsibility we share as government and citizens to reverse the tide,” he declared.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Special Guest of Honour, the Vice President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safer highways.
“We must recommit ourselves to the implementation of the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy. While progress has been made, much remains to be done to reduce the burden of road crashes across the country,” he said.
The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Saul Billingsley, Executive Director of the FIA Foundation, London, who set the tone for dialogue on aligning Nigeria’s road safety efforts with global best practices.
Discussants included Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, CFR, President of the Court of Appeal; General Christopher Gwabin Musa, OFR, Chief of Defence Staff; Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy; Prof. Patricia Manko Lar, Acting Vice Chancellor, University of Abuja; and Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Highlighting reforms under his watch, Corps Marshal Mohammed noted that the FRSC has:
”Introduced a paperless electronic document management system,
”Deepened collaboration with security agencies,
”Partnered with universities and innovators for digital traffic solutions,
”Reinvigorated driver training programmes, and
”Mainstreamed road safety into national development conversations”.
He emphasised that these milestones represent “stepping stones toward a larger vision, one that positions Nigeria in the global conversation on safe mobility and sustainable development.”
Past speakers in the Lecture Series include Chief Emeka Anyaoku, CON, CFR, Prince Michael of Kent, and former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. The revival of the Series, observers say, signals a new era for the FRSC under Mohammed’s leadership.
Concluding the session, Corps Marshal Mohammed underscored the urgency of the mission:
“Every crash prevented is a life saved. Our roads must no longer be corridors of tragedy but avenues of opportunity and growth.”
With its 8th edition, the FRSC Annual Lecture Series has returned as a clarion call for a national movement—one that seeks safer roads, smarter mobility, and a future where Nigerian journeys end in joy, not grief.
