The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has stated that the party is closely monitoring the unfolding political developments in Rivers State and will issue a response only after a thorough assessment.
Abdullahi, on Thursday, in an interview with Vanguard, said, “We’re studying political developments in Rivers. Let us study it, see what happens, and then take an informed position on the matter.”
The tension in Rivers State has escalated as the state House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
The move has raised eyebrows, especially since Governor Fubara had recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside a significant number of Rivers lawmakers.
On December 5, 2025, approximately 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Just a few days later, Governor Fubara followed suit, formally joining the ruling party on December 9, 2025. The defections sparked hopes that aligning with the ruling party would protect the governor from potential political challenges.
The impeachment proceedings came as a shock to many, given the assumption that Fubara’s shift to the APC would safeguard him from such threats.
However, political tensions have been high between the governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who has consistently made remarks that have sparked further animosity.
Earlier, Wike had stated that if Fubara won a second term as governor, he would be politically buried. In contrast, Governor Fubara had boasted about his dominance in the state’s politics, citing his APC membership card with the number 001, implying his central role in the party’s affairs in Rivers State.
This marks the third time that the Rivers State House of Assembly has attempted to impeach Governor Fubara. The first attempt came in 2023, followed by a second attempt in 2025, just before the state of emergency was declared in the state.
Now, with the 2026 impeachment effort, it remains to be seen whether this will succeed or if the governor will once again survive the political onslaught.
