Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has handed a one-month ultimatum to Raffoul Nigeria Limited, the contractor handling the 6.5-kilometre Woji–Aleto–Alesa–Refinery Road, warning that failure to meet the deadline will result in the outright termination of the contract.
Naijaonpoint reports that the governor issued the directive on Friday during an unscheduled inspection of the project site, where he was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Projects, Hebron Wisdom.
His Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, disclosed the governor’s stance in a statement.
Visibly displeased, Fubara berated the contractor for what he described as poor performance, despite the multiple variations approved to aid completion of the road and its 200-metre bridge.
The governor lamented, “This project was awarded in June 2020 by my predecessor. I even gave them two variations to enable them to achieve a good proportion of this job. But to my greatest surprise, there is no progress to show for it.”
He recalled that the project had once been evaluated and cancelled under the previous emergency administration but that he gave Raffoul another chance, stressing that the grace period was fast running out.
Fubara warned, “If they cannot complete this work in the next month, I will revert to the earlier position taken by the administrator during the state of emergency.”
The governor also expressed dismay at the ongoing dredging activities close to the bridge construction, describing it as unsafe and unacceptable.
He queried, “How can anyone be dredging so close to a bridge? Is that proper?
“If I come here another time or receive information that dredging is being conducted around this area, I will personally supervise the destruction of the dredger.”
Fubara reaffirmed that his administration was committed to delivering quality infrastructure across Rivers State but would not condone contractors failing to meet obligations.
