The Rivers State House of Assembly has reaffirmed that the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, remain ongoing.
The assembly initiated the move on Thursday, after Majority Leader Major Jack presented allegations of gross misconduct against the governor, endorsed by 26 lawmakers.
However, on Friday, reports surfaced claiming that the legislative house had paused the impeachment effort.
Reacting in a statement, Enemi George, chair of the assembly committee on information, petitions and complaints, dismissed the claims. He stated that the notices of gross misconduct had already been served on Fubara and Odu, and the lawmakers were now awaiting their formal replies.
George stressed that the impeachment effort remains active, warning against what he termed misleading news reports.
“We are aware that certain persons and media platforms are at it again to misinform the public, particularly to the effect that the process has been halted or discontinued,” the statement reads.
“Some are trending false narratives to cause disaffection between the House and well-meaning Nigerians.
“I call on all and sundry to disregard their antics, as their actions have already failed. We remain committed to our constitutional duties and will not be dissuaded by cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not have our country’s nascent democracy at heart.”
George reiterated that residents should ignore the claims circulating online, adding that the assembly “will not be deterred by cheap blackmail or threats” and will continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.
