Top members and some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have stepped in to de-escalate the political crisis in Rivers State following the seven-day impeachment notice issued by the Rivers State House of Assembly to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.
According to Punch, key APC figures have initiated efforts to find a “political solution” to the crisis, with underground moves already in place to ease tensions.
A source close to the APC leadership revealed that “There are underground moves already aimed at dousing the tension and resolving the matter. A political solution is being sought. Both the governor and the FCT minister are already being reached out to.”
Political actors and high-ranking federal officials with close ties to the two parties are reportedly working behind the scenes to prevent further conflict.
The move comes after fresh impeachment proceedings were launched against Governor Fubara and his deputy, which raised the stakes in the already volatile political atmosphere.
In a bid to ensure peace and prevent further escalation, key government officials and senior politicians are reportedly engaging both Fubara and Wike to help resolve the matter.
The Presidency is being briefed on the developments, with a source close to the situation adding, “The President will intervene. However, key members of the government, as well as some top politicians, are already reaching out to both men.”
The political crisis in Rivers State took a more dramatic turn on Thursday when the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Odu. A seven-day notice was issued, demanding that the two respond to allegations of gross misconduct.
During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the House cited the governor’s refusal to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill for legislative consideration as one of the major reasons for the impeachment motion.
The 27 lawmakers aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accused Fubara and his deputy of frustrating the Assembly’s constitutional duties, describing their actions as impeachable offences.
The impeachment process was set in motion after a motion was moved by the Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, and seconded by Silvernus Nwankwo, which cited the alleged constitutional violations.
The tension between the two factions in Rivers has been escalating for some time, with Governor Fubara and Minister Wike at odds.
While Fubara has claimed to remain the political leader of the state following his defection to the APC, Wike has publicly stated that Fubara’s re-election bid would be “buried politically.”
