The Federal Government on Monday welcomed the conviction of separatist agitator and self-styled Prime Minister of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, by a Finnish court, vowing to take additional steps once it receives the full judgment.

In a statement signed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the government described the ruling as a vindication of its position that Ekpa was complicit in terrorism-related crimes against Nigerians, particularly in the South-East.

Fagbemi said, “We receive the good news of the conviction of the leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, by the Finnish court.

“His conviction for terrorism and other related offences filed against him by the Finnish government is a confirmation that Ekpa had influenced and committed heinous crimes against the Nigerian people, especially in the South-East.”

The AGF assured that Abuja would not rest on the matter, noting that follow-up measures would be taken after thoroughly reviewing the Finnish court’s judgment.

“Appropriate further actions would be taken upon receipt and understudying a copy of the judgement of the court,” Fagbemi declared.

The minister also commended Helsinki for its cooperation with Nigeria in tackling insecurity, describing the conviction as a positive signal for future collaboration.

“We commend the Finnish authorities for supporting Nigeria in the fight against insecurity and see this as a signal of future collaboration,” he said.
