Samsung has begun its May 2024 security update rollout for Galaxy devices. As expected, the Galaxy S24 series is getting the new security patch first. The company is currently pushing the update in the US. It should soon expand the rollout to other markets. This month’s Security Maintenance Release (SMR) contains over 50 vulnerability patches.

Samsung rolls out the May update to the Galaxy S24 series in the US

As of this writing, Samsung’s May SMR is available for the carrier-locked Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra in the US. The new flagships are receiving the update with the firmware build number S921USQS2AXD3. The update is rolling out widely across all major carrier networks, including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. The OTA (over the air) package weighs just over 500MB, though it varies depending on the model.

Samsung should soon release the May security patch for the factory-unlocked Galaxy S24 units in the US. A global rollout should also be right around the corner. The build number and OTA file size may vary across markets and device models, but the update’s content will probably remain unchanged. Speaking of which, this update doesn’t bring any new features or improvements. It only contains the latest security fixes.

The Korean firm recently revealed that the May 2024 SMR for Galaxy devices contains 30 Android OS fixes from Google and 25 Galaxy-specific patches from its side. Google patched three critical security flaws in Android this month. The latter group of security issues includes a high-severity authentication bypass issue in the bootloader. Samsung also patched issues in Setup Wizard, Secure Folder, TelephonyUI, and other system services.

These security fixes will gradually roll out to more Galaxy devices, including all flagship models launched in 2021 and later. Samsung will also update a few mid-range and budget models. If you are using a Galaxy phone or tablet, you can check for new software updates from the Settings app. Go to the Software update menu and tap Download and install. If no update is available today, check back later.

Samsung’s latest flagships may get a bigger update in June

The Galaxy S24 series is expected to receive camera fixes and improvements with the June update. The new flagships boast an excellent camera system, particularly the Ultra model, but it isn’t perfect. There is a lot of room for improvement. Samsung has already pushed two camera updates to the phones. Another one may be on the way next month. We will let you know when it arrives.
